What is LLRS?Founded in 1989 as ASAMI—North America (The Association for the Study and Application of Methods of Ilizarov), the Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Society is an organization devoted to stimulating scientific exchange and fostering research and clinical excellence in limb lengthening, limb reconstruction, extremity deformity correction, and complex fracture treatment. The organization is composed of active physician members from North America, corresponding physicians, members from around the world, and associate health care and research members. All members share a special interest in distraction histiogenesis, the generation of bone and soft tissue by distraction. In 1989, Dr. Dror Paley organized a small group of physicians and scientists as the North American chapter of ASAMI. The Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Society: ASAMI—North America has grown to 150 members. There are ASAMI chapters throughout the world. Members share an interest in distraction histiogenesis principles and techniques originally developed by Professor Gavriil Ilizarov. The members of LLRS share an interest in the generation of bone and soft tissue by distraction, but do not limit their practices to the Ilizarov external fixation system. Members' interests include external fixation of fractures, correction of limb deformities, lengthening of extremities, and treatment of chronic infections, nonunions and tumors. LLRS activities include an annual scientific meeting, a Specialty Day program at AAOS' annual meeting, an introduction to limb lengthening and reconstruction, and external fixation course, research grants, and the quarterly newsletter, Distractions.
